New York Business Licensing Requirements

Getting your New York Certificate of Authority is just one step. Depending on your business, you may need additional licenses.

New York Department of State Registration

Most businesses must register with the NY Department of State:

  • LLCs — Articles of Organization ($200)
  • Corporations — Certificate of Incorporation ($125)
  • LLPs — Registration ($200)

Register at dos.ny.gov.

Assumed Name (DBA)

If operating under a different name, file with your county clerk. NYC businesses file with the county clerk in any of the five boroughs.

Federal EIN

Get your free EIN at irs.gov/ein.

NYC Specific Requirements

New York City requires additional licenses for many businesses:

  • General Vendor License
  • Food Service Establishment Permit
  • Sidewalk Cafe License
  • Home Occupation permits

Professional Licenses

Many professions require licensure through NYSED Office of the Professions:

  • Accountants, architects, engineers
  • Cosmetologists and barbers
  • Real estate professionals (DOS)

  • Food Service: Health Department permit
  • Alcohol: SLA license (State Liquor Authority)
