How Local Sales Tax Works in Texas

Texas caps total local sales tax at 2%, so the combined rate can never exceed 8.25% anywhere in the state. That 2% is shared between cities, counties, transit authorities and special purpose districts, and once the cap is reached no further local tax can be added — which is why most Texas metro addresses sit at exactly 8.25%.

Which Texas Rate Should You Charge?

Texas is origin-sourced for sales made at or shipped from a Texas place of business: the local rates are those of the seller’s location. Sales shipped into Texas from outside the state are destination-sourced, and remote sellers may elect a single flat local use tax rate instead of tracking jurisdictions.

What Texas Taxes — and What It Doesn’t

Groceries for home consumption, prescription drugs and over-the-counter drugs with a required label are exempt. Texas taxes a defined list of services including data processing, information services, security, and repair of tangible property.
