How Local Sales Tax Works in Idaho
Idaho has almost no local sales tax. Only a small number of resort cities and auditorium districts, mostly tourist communities, are permitted to add a local option tax, and the state average local rate is a fraction of a percent. Outside those communities the 6% state rate is the whole rate.
Which Idaho Rate Should You Charge?
Idaho is destination-sourced, so the rate follows the address where the buyer receives the goods. In practice this only changes the rate if the delivery address falls inside one of the resort or auditorium districts.
What Idaho Taxes — and What It Doesn’t
Groceries are taxable in Idaho, offset by an annual grocery credit claimed on the income tax return rather than by an exemption at the register. Prescription drugs are exempt and most services are untaxed.
